War on Warhole

showing until 25 October 2009

“For the past 4 decades Warhol’s now hackneyed quote has not only proved incredibly tenacious but prophetic in its accuracy. From reality television to viral memes the speed in which ideas, artefacts and human beings are churned through the global cultural turnstile smacks to me at times of cold-blooded brutality.

This new work deals with ideas I’ve been thinking of recently. Namely the fickleness of fortune and the shelf-life of most things considered trendy versus the old fashioned idea of paying ones dues - of earning one’s place in the cultural landscape through persistent work.

My practice is influenced by a multiplicity of interest. I have a fascination for avant-garde movements and conceptual art in general – I guess you can see some resonances in various pieces through the years. Some of my favourite artists are: Mona Hatoum, Felix-Gonzales Torres, Rachel Whiteread, Anish Kapoor, Suzanne Victor, Barry McGee, William Kentridge, SWOON, DJ Spooky, On Kawara, Tehching Hsie and David Medalla amongst others.”   -  Parreno 2009
